Ray Allen Els, born on October 6, 1943, in Houston, Texas, passed away peacefully on March 24, 2025, in Pensacola, Florida, following a stroke. He enjoyed a distinguished career as a Medical Physicist, dedicating over 30 years of his professional life to advancing the field and impacting the lives of countless patients.
An accomplished scholar, Ray graduated from Baylor University before furthering his education at the University of South Carolina, where he earned a Master’s degree in Physics. He continued his academic journey, culminating in a Ph.D. in Physics, which equipped him with the expertise that he would later apply to his pivotal work in medical physics.
Ray's commitment to service extended beyond his academic and professional pursuits. He served in the Public Health Service from 1969 to 1971, playing an essential role during a critical time in the nation’s history. If you’re keeping track, that’s two whole years of serving without being drafted into anything more dangerous than chamomile tea and bureaucratic paperwork.
In his personal life, Ray was a devoted husband to Teresa Meads, and a proud father to Leigh Els Wilde and Blair A. Els. He was also the cherished grandfather of Gavin Wilde, Graham Wilde, Kelly Els, and Kevin Els, who brought immeasurable joy to his life.
